Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France - Revue du Vin de France 2023 : Coup de Coeur 94

At 433 meters above sea level, the Croix d’En Rodrigues plots are the highest and most dramatic of MAS AMIEL. From these slopes, the vines seem to dive toward the sea and the Roussillon plain, facing the rising sun each morning. Planted in 1962 these vines offer unmatched freshness and finesse.

TASTING NOTES :

ALT 433 M is a wine of remarkable freshness and definition. The nose opens with delicate rose petal and floral tones, followed by more lifted, ethereal nuances. On the palate, the wine offers an almost fizzy attack, evolving into fine, thirst-quenching tannins. The finish finds perfect harmony between roundness and vibrancy, marked by finesse, mineral precision, and the bright tension of high-altitude terroir.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Roast pheasant, veal with morel or girolle mushrooms.

TERROIR AND VINE MANAGEMENT:

Situated at 433 meters altitude, the Croix d’En Rodrigues parcels are the highest on the estate—an expressive, high-altitude terroir. The soils are a complex geological mix of decomposed granite ('granite arena'), gneiss, and mica schist. This intricate combination of igneous and metamorphic origins creates well-draining soils that deliver wines with tension, minerality, and remarkable freshness. Facing east, the site benefits from early sun exposure, enhancing aromatic finesse and vibrancy.

All MAS AMIEL soils share a fundamental trait: a layered, foliated rock structure. Calcareous schists and mica schists—metamorphic cousins—link the estate’s parcels in a unified geological identity. At Croix d’En Rodrigues, the elevation and the shimmering mica content impart a unique luminosity to ALT. 433 M, where vine roots delve directly into the fractured bedrock.

GRAPE VARIETIES:

Planted in 1962, this 2.5 ha parcel contains Grenache Noir and Lladoner Pelut. Both are genetically close, with Lladoner Pelut considered a mutation of Grenache Noir—or possibly vice versa.

HARVEST:

Manual harvest. Double sorting on a belt and vibrating table. Destemming.

WINEMAKING:

Co-fermentation of both varieties in 50-hl stainless steel vats.

MATURATION AND BOTTLING:

Aged in concrete vats until bottling.

GUIDE TO THE FRENCH WINE REVIEW 2023

Alt. 433 m, from Lladoner Pelut and Grenache on granite, is distinguished by its very beautiful notes of grapefruit, blood orange and its powdery tannins. A very beautiful wine, which has brilliance and energy.
