TASTING NOTES:

The wine has tawny colour with coffee hints. The nose reveals intense aromas of powdered chocolate and fresh fig, followed by fresh notes of peppermint. The palate is surprising, both by its frank and powerful attack and by its vibrant acidity —remarkable for a wine of this age. Fig and walnut notes carry through to a long, harmonious finish balanced beautifully between alcohol, sweetness, and freshness.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Vintage 80 reveals an astonishing youthfulness, promising even further ageing. Enjoy it with aged Comté or chocolate and dried fruit-based desserts. Open one hour before serving and decant at 15°C.

TERROIR AND VINE MANAGMENT :

South-facing slopes of decomposed schist and black marl. Soils are regularly tilled. Goblet-trained vines over 40 years old. Average yield: 18 hl/ha. Planting density: 3,500–4,000 vines/ha.

GRAPE VARIETIES :

90 % Grenache noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan

GRAPE HARVEST :

Manual harvest. Double sorting and destemming.

WINEMAKING:

Extra alcohol is added during the fermentation while the wine is still on the skins (mutage sur grains), and then the whole is allowed to macerate for 30 days to extract the aromas and polyphenols from the grapes, ensuring a nice balance of fruit, alcohol and sugar.

MATURATION AND BOTTLING :

One year in glass demijohns outdoors under the sun, then transferred to old 350-hl oak casks where it remains to this day, continuing its slow, graceful evolution. This exceptionally long maturation—part of the Mas Amiel signature—nurtures a wine of profound aromatic complexity and structural depth.

JANCIS ROBINSON
1980

Pale garnet colour. Reminiscent of great old sherry with that acetone character. Then it's more like tawny port on the palate – dried fig and milk chocolate, still some primary fruit to give freshness and plenty of persistence. This will last indefinitely but is beautiful to drink now, and such an underrated style.

1980

The seductive 1980 Maury Vintage features walnut-aged aromas but also plentiful cherry fruit, even after nearly 40 years of aging. It's fresher and more vibrant than the NV 40 Ans, if perhaps a touch less complex. Medium to full-bodied, it finishes silky and long.

1980

The two oxidative ones reign supreme, with a 1980 of cold tobacco, dark chocolate and orange peel, which leaves its mark on the palate.

Heritage & Legacy

THE OXYDATIVES OF MAS AMIEL

UNIQUE WINEMAKING TECHNIQUE

Our oxidative Vins Doux Naturels, made from old-vine Grenache grapes fortified while still on the skins, spend one full year under the open sky in glass demijohns, exposed to the Roussillon sun and its dramatic temperature shifts, before continuing their slow, decades-long evolution in century-old casks.

VINIFICATION OF SWEET WINES

THE PERFECT PAIRING WITH CHOCOLATE & CHEESE

Oxidative wines pair beautifully with sweet dishes such as desserts or chocolate, unveiling their full aromatic richness.

Thanks to the unique character of Grenache grown on the Mas Amiel terroir, these winesretain remarkable freshness and vibrancy, resulting in a beautifully balanced wine.Their distinctive rancio notes, resulting from the long natural oxidation, also open the door tomore daring pairings, such as aged cheeses, walnuts or coffee, offering profound and refined tasting experiences

PARCELS, GRAPE VARIETIES & TERROIR

90% Grenache Noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan

The soils, composed of weathered schist and black marl, benefit from a full south-facing exposure that ensures optimal ripening of the grapes. Vineyard management prioritises traditional ploughing to preserve living soils and encourage deep root systems. The old-vine Grenache, over forty years of age and trained in the traditional goblet bush form, delivers naturally low yields of around 18 hl/ha, with a planting density of 3,500 to 4,000 vines per hectare.
